When Rupli’s husband was diagnosed with a major illness that prevented him from working, she was suddenly faced with the responsibility of being the breadwinner in the family. She struggled daily as the family slipped into poverty. When she was offered a job through Shrimad Rajchandra Mahila Gruha Udyog, her life changed forever. She uses her skills productively and hand-crafts food products and incense sticks in a clean, safe and friendly environment, working alongside and making friends with other women. The money she earns enables Rupli to support her family and pay for her husband’s treatment – an extremely empowering and liberating experience.
“I came to know about Shrimad Rajchandra Mahila Gruha Udyog (SRMGU) from my village women folk and the personal development that these ladies had experienced working there. Knowing this, I was inspired to join this initiative and began working here. The best aspect of Shrimad Rajchandra Mahila Gruha Udyog is that they imparted training to me to ensure I learnt the process well and once I was well versed with it, they ensure continuous growth and development. Working at this project for the last 4 years, I can say that it has helped in the progress of my entire family, consisting of my husband and three children.”
Viacom18 Media Private Limited, SRLC’s corporate supporter at the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2019 (TMM), came up with a novel idea of doing something truly selfless. Viacom18 organised a special retreat in Mumbai for rural women from SRMGU and gave them an opportunity to participate in TMM, in place of their own employees. The 5 day visit started with the group visiting the Viacom18 head-quarters in Mumbai for a lunch with Mr. Sudhanshu Vats – Group CEO and the India leadership team. The group explored India’s financial capital through a guided tour, visiting Mani Bhavan, Gateway of India, Girgaum Chowpatty, Babulnath Temple, Swaminarayan Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple, Siddhivinayak Temple, ISKCON Temple, Film City and Viacom 18 sets for participation in a TV show. This show was telecast on Colours Gujarati on January 30, wherein these rural women shared their stories of self-reliance.
