A plaguing concern in rural India is providing affordable health care solutions in remote areas. The rural population located in the Valsad district of South Gujarat ranks amongst the poorest in the state, grappling with issues like poverty, malnutrition, illiteracy and the lack of awareness of health related issues. These factors lead to premature deliveries, physical and mental disabilities, vulnerability to diseases and illnesses, non-adherence to basic hygiene standards and other problems.
Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital is a charitable, multi-speciality hospital located in Dharampur that offers a wide range of services and uses high quality medical technology rarely seen in rural areas. We are one of the best-equipped hospitals in the area, and the Government of Gujarat has designated us as a First Referral Unit (FRU) in Valsad district. We strive to provide comprehensive medical services of high quality at rates that are subsidised and affordable or free for the underprivileged. We do this in a holistic manner which includes health awareness, preventative care, ensuring safe motherhood, a neonatal ICU to cater to complications during childbirth, an early intervention centre to prevent any physical or mental disability among children due to complications at birth. In addition, we have a child-friendly centre to treat cases of physical or mental disability. Lastly, we reach out to those who cannot reach us through our outreach model.
Safeguarding the health of mothers, newborns and children is our primary focus, as the health of these groups affects the health of the community as a whole. In addition to treating patients within the hospital, we organise medical screening camps in remote villages, in which our doctors examine thousands of patients.
Hinchlal Chaudhari, a 52 year resident of Mumbai was admitted to SRH with a non-healing ulcer of the left leg, extending from the mid-thigh to the knee. The patient had sought initial consultation from reputed hospitals in Mumbai but his condition kept on deteriorating. His employer shared the problem with SRH volunteers and the patient was immediately admitted there.
On clinical evaluation, he was diagnosed to have gangrene in left leg with septicaemia. In view of his precarious condition, an emergency mid-thigh amputation was conducted. The team of skilful doctors and staff meticulously managed the post-operative complications of septic encephalopathy and dyselectrolytemia. The patient was managed in the intensive care unit under the joint supervision of consultant surgeon and physician and received the best possible nursing care, nutritional and moral support.
“In the immensely inaccessible areas of Dharampur, Kaprada and Dang, the underprivileged are being offered healthcare services not only through Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital, but even through its outreach services. For this, the Gujarat Government is indebted to them for improving the Human Development Index of the State, by providing these types of healthcare services to people from the remotest of areas, I am thankful to Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital.”
A path-breaking research study was recently carried out in Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital, one of the two centres across India, selected for conducting this research. The study explored a technique known as ‘physiological cord clamping’, which involves delaying the severing of the umbilical cord until natural delivery of the placenta. This is contrary to the currently prevailing global practice of cutting the umbilical cord within a few minutes of delivery and forcing out the placenta with medical assistance.
Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital continues to be at the cutting edge of medical innovations for serving the rural population.
